How China’s ‘Whole-Process People’s Democracy’ Works: Institutions, Logic, and Practice
A seminar of the Jean Monnet Chair Challenges to Democracy and Representation in the EU (EuDARe), coordinated by Prof. Marcello Carammia, in Aula XXI Marzo, Palazzo Pedagaggi.
Shasha Guo, doctoral researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and visiting scholar at the DSPS, discussed a central concept in contemporary Chinese political discourse: the model of “Whole-Process People’s Democracy”. The seminar analysed its institutional foundations, operating mechanisms, and underlying logic, and offered a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between the Chinese model of democracy and Western liberal democracy, showing where this approach to participation and representation departs from, and in some respects challenges, liberal democratic understandings.
The seminar was held in English, with Italian subtitles available. A recording is kept in the Chair’s archive.
