Populism, Post-Democracy, New Parties: The Im/Possible Renewal
A seminar of the Jean Monnet Chair Challenges to Democracy and Representation in the EU (EuDARe), coordinated by Prof. Marcello Carammia, in Aula XXI Marzo, Palazzo Pedagaggi.
Prof. Emilia Zankina, Professor of Political Science and Vice Provost for Global Engagement at Temple University, discussed the relationship between populism, post-democracy, and the emergence of new political parties in contemporary democracies: whether new political actors contribute to democratic renewal or reinforce the existing challenges to representation. Drawing on recent developments in Europe and beyond, the seminar examined how populist movements and newly founded parties are reshaping political competition, citizen participation, and the quality of democracy.
Moderated by Fulvio Attinà, Professor Emeritus of Political Science (DSPS). The seminar was held in English, with Italian subtitles available.
